The Evolution of Social Dominance

چکیده

A difference in dominance rank is an often-usedcue to resolve con icts between two animals without escalated Ž ghts. At the group level, adherence to a dominance convention efŽ ciently reduces the costs associatedwith con icts, but from an individual’s point of view, it is difŽ cult to explainwhy a low ranking individualshould accept its subordinatestatus. This is especially true if, as suggested by several authors, dominance not necessarily re ects differences in Ž ghting ability but rather results from arbitrary historical asymmetries. According to this idea, rank differentiationemerges from behavioural strategies, referred to as winner and loser effects, in which winners of previous con icts are more likely to win the current con ict, whereas the losers of previous con icts are less likely to do so. In order to investigatewhether dominance, based on such winner and loser effects, can be evolutionarily stable, we analyse a game theoretical model. The model focuses on an extreme case in which there are no differences in Ž ghting ability between individuals at all. The only asymmetries that may arise between individuals are generated by the outcome of previous con icts. By means of numerical analysis, we Ž nd alternative evolutionarily stable strategies, which all utilize these asymmetries for conventional con ict resolution. One class of these strategies is based on winner and loser effects, thus generating evolutionarily stable dominance relations even in the absence of differences in resource holding potential.

How the Social Environment Shaped the Evolution of Mind

Dominance hierarchies are ubiquitous in the societies of human and nonhuman animals. Evidence from comparative, developmental, and cognitive psychological investigations is presented that show how social dominance hierarchies shaped the evolution of the human mind, and hence, human social institutions. It is argued that the pressures that arise from living in hierarchical social groups laid a f...

Prestige and Dominance as Differential Correlates of Moral Foundations and Its Clinical Implications

Objective: The ways people use for social rank (dominance vs prestige) could explain difference attitude toward five moral foundations. The aim of this study was to investigate the differential relationship between prestige, dominance and moral foundations. Methods: This study conducted with 150 participants who respond to the moral foundation questionnaire and dominance-prestige scale. Multip...

Frequency-dependent social dominance in a color polymorphic cichlid fish.

A mechanism commonly suggested to explain the persistence of color polymorphisms in animals is negative frequency-dependent selection. It could result from a social dominance advantage to rare morphs. We tested for this in males of red and blue color morphs of the Lake Victoria cichlid, Pundamilia. Earlier work has shown that males preferentially attack the males of their own morph, while red m...

Social life, evolution of intelligence, behaviour and human brain size

Social life is one of the most critical factors of the evolution of the behavior of non-human primates and humans. Several factors, such as an increase in brain size, adaptive modules, and grooming, are related to the complexities of social groups. Although some scientists have mentioned foraging as a rival hypothesis for the evolution of behavior, in this research, we tried to investigate the ...

Evolution of autonomous hierarchy formation and maintenance

Hierarchy among social animals is ubiquitous, and affects the social structures of gregarious species not only by interaction among species within the population, but also through other social forces such as mating, nesting location, amount and the quality of food they receive, or reproductive success. Since T. Schjelderup-Ebbe developed the structural definition of dominance and hierarchy in 1...

Dissecting the Transcriptional Patterns of Social Dominance across Teleosts.

In many species, under varying ecological conditions, social interactions among individuals result in the formation of dominance hierarchies. Despite general similarities, there are robust differences among dominance hierarchies across species, populations, environments, life stages, sexes, and individuals. Understanding the proximate mechanisms underlying the variation is an important step tow...
